Is It Legal To Make A Left Turn At A Red Light Onto A One-Way Street?
I was in Houston over the Labor Day weekend, mostly in the downtown area. Downtown Houston has a bunch of one-way streets. And I never know if it's legal to turn left onto a one-way street if you have the red light. I got to thinking about it, I'm sure I'm not the only driver to not know the legal rule for turning left on red onto a one-way street. So I decided to find out.
First, let us visit those locations that prohibit a left turn on red. According to AAA, you cannot make a left turn on red in Connecticut, Missouri, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York City.
As it turns out, Texas and Louisiana have the same law for making a left turn on red onto a one-way street. It goes like this, you can turn left on red onto a one-way street but only if the street you are on is also a one-way.
After researching this, many people tend to believe it is legal in Louisiana and Texas to make a left turn, at a red light, onto a one-way in any situation. That is not the case. It is only legal to do so in both states if you are turning onto a one-way from a one-way.
And now we both know. Drive safe!
