This is Thanksgiving. This is Louisiana. There is no such thing as a small family gathering in Cajun Country. However, this year, the pandemic year of 2020, might change some of our own best practices when it comes to the saying of Grace and counting of Blessings around a table filled with delicious food this year.

Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory released a statement on Saturday evening that addressed the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and the need for good judgment by all when it comes to celebrating the holiday.

The Mayor-President went out of his way to thank Acadiana's healthcare community and the tireless workers who have been on the job non-stop since the pandemic began. Guillory also offered words of praise for the Louisiana Department of Health and Dr. Tina Stefanski who oversees the Acadiana Region for LDH.

Guillory also spoke directly to you and me asking us to curtail our normally large Thanksgiving gatherings by allowing good judgment to be our guide. Guillory suggested that while he hoped for everyone a joyous Thanksgiving he also hoped that a joyous celebration in November wouldn't turn into a tragedy by December.

Of course, the Mayor-President was referring to the potential spread of COVID-19 among family members because of exposure during family gatherings over Thanksgiving. The Centers for Disease Control is also asking that families limit their travels this Thanksgiving and keep gatherings small. The CDC also is suggesting that social distancing be maintained, even among family members, and that face-covering and masks be included in this year's celebration as well.
