I couldn't believe it when I read it, either, but this news story from Lent 2014 spotlights a Lutheran church in Ohio that offers drive - thru service on Ash Wednesday. Members (and even non - members) of the Zion United Lutheran Church can drive through the church parking lot and receive ashes and a blessing and then continue on their way.

As a Catholic, I think this is a GREAT idea. Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, nor are ashes considered a sacrament, but instead, sacramentals. If it would mean more people would receive the ashes and a blessing at the beginning of Lent, why not do it? I think this is one way the Catholic Church could meet the people of today half - way.
