When a storm or hurricane is approaching the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, each of us gets items together that we know come in handy for dealing with the fallout of the situation. Most people make sure their generators are working, they stock their shelves with non-perishable food items, and we make sure we have we have cellphone chargers and batteries.

We have plenty of stories for informational purposes. Just the search bar of this website using the words "hurricane" or "weather", and you will find out everything you need to know.

We all have so much on our minds, that with this story, we thought we would take a lighter tone that would put a smile on your face.

But, what about the items that we might "need" in order to ride out a storm? Some things we stock up on or make sure that we have might not be conventional necessarily.

Unpredictable is the perfect word to describe what happens with an approaching storm. As we wait for the storm and then go through it, we might want things that bring us comfort.

There are likely several crazy things we Cajuns might stock up on.

#10 Pirogues For Minimal Street Flooding

Having a pirogue or a kayak is just a fun thing for a Cajun to have around any time of year.

If you are always in that neighborhood that ends up with localized street flooding, having a little pirogue can come in handy for making a visit to the neighbors! Someone in our building says they have had this experience before; only street flooding.

Jump in your boat, and paddle down to see your neighbors! They may have gumbo in their refrigerator. Pirogues are also a good idea just in case you run out of beer and need to paddle to the corner convenience store.

#9 Rubber Boots

Instead of having to use your rubber boots to clean out the street or your backyard, you can make an interesting collage of rubber-boot selfies with your family and neighbors.

Every Cajun has at least one pair of rubber boots. They ALWAYS come in handy.

#8 Subscription-Based Streaming Services

Who hasn't heard the phrase, "Netflix and chill"? If you get the day off, you will probably be getting on to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, or any other subscription-based streaming to watch something great.

We have to ride out the wind and rain. So we might as well stream a show that we love or start something tantalizing that's new.

Playing Cards

#7 A Few Decks of Cards

Plenty of us want something to do that doesn't have to do with watching something on a screen. Breaking out a deck of cards for some poker or bourre is one of those ideas that never goes wrong.

Whether it is Hold 'em, Seven-card stud, or draw poker, Cajuns are constantly having a great time with friends.

If you are playing poker or bourre, someone can walk away with a good amount of money unless you only play for fun. If you win, at least you get bragging rights.

#6 Big Box of Boudin

Forget all the non-perishable food for a second. We know we have to get that ready when a storm is coming, but the other staple you need is a big ole box of boudin!

Every good Cajun knows boudin is perfect for any meal.

Whether you eat that with a cup of coffee for breakfast, have a link with your iced tea at lunch, or eat it for an appetizer before dinner, don't get stuck without a box of boudin.

#5 BBQ Pit

Whether you are planning to put pork on the pit with charcoal or you are going to light up the gas grill, a BBQ pit or grill is a must-have when you are stuck at home.

Throwing some chicken leg quarters and sausage on the pit is a great way to take your mind off of a storm.

And, if you know the electricity isn't going to go off, you might as well get plenty of cooking done at one time and then you don't have to cook later in the week. If the electricity does go off, at least you can still cook a hot meal!

#4 Generator

You may not have to worry about a serious storm, and we sure hope that is the case. School closures and your office closing down means you will have time at home.

You still need to check the generator in case the electricity does turn off for a bit.

Make sure your generator is ready to power your fridge, but also your portable ice machine and blender. Nothing says a day off like a delicious daiquiri.

#3 Access to a Radio or Radio App

Everyone wants to know what is happening with our neighbors and friends. They may need us after a storm, and we will always go if we don't have to clean up at our home.

Having a radio by your side, or just having the app of your favorite station playing allows you to keep up with the latest information.

The bonus is you get to hear your favorite music or show.

#2 Case(s) of Beer

If you have to sit at home all day, you might as well be prepared.

Get what you love, use your ice chest to cool it down, and be ready to share if your neighbor runs out.

#1 A Well-Stocked Bar

You may not have to deal with so if you need time to yourself you might as well use the time to try out a new cocktail.

Now, you may agree with this list, or you may think the order should be rearranged. You can tell us what you think.
