Ariana Grande Chokes Up Over ‘Worst Year’ of Personal Life During Billboard Woman of the Year Speech
Ariana Grande took the stage at Billboard's annual Women in Music event Thursday night (December 6) to perform and accept the prestigious Woman of the Year award.
After performing her No. 1 new single "thank u, next," Ariana was presented the award by music icon Patti LaBelle, who couldn't stop singing Grande's praises. "I told her 'sing like the little white Black girl that she is! She got soul like a mug!" LaBelle exclaimed, reminiscing about when she and Ariana performed at the White House for President Barack Obama.
Award in hand, Ariana was visibly shaken by the audience giving her a standing ovation. "No, you don't have to stand! This is weird," the humble singer said to the crowd.
"This is an incredible honor. I feel completely undeserving and it's truly insane," Ariana said looking down at her award. Addressing Billboard, Grande continued, "I want to thank you guys for putting on this event every year, because it acknowledges how male-dominated this industry is... It's really col to be in this room with so many women I love."
After thanking her label and managers, Ariana got personal about why the award and all her recent success means so much to her. "I find it interesting that this has been one of the best years of my career, and one of the worst of my life.... A lot of people would look at someone in my position right now... and think 'she's really got her sh-t together, she's got it all,' and I do, but as far as my personal life goes, I really have no idea what the f-ck I'm doing, so it's been a very conflicting [year]."
"If you're someone out there who has no idea what this next chapter's gonna' bring, you're not alone in that," Ariana said as she started to tear up. "I'm looking forward to embracing whatever happens and whatever comes my way."
Grande went on to say she's "so thankful" for her family and close friends, including Victoria Monet and Tayla Parx, her two songwriting partners who helped craft "thank u, next" and her upcoming album of the same title, which she spilled a bit of tea about as well.
"I'm really looking forward to everyone hearing it... It's like, if [the movie] First Wives Club were an album. That's the album," Ariana said describing her upcoming new project that we can't wait to hear.
Ariana's closing thought resulted in a thunderous cheer. "I look forward to... learning to give some of the love and forgiveness that I've given away so frivolously and easily to men in the past, to myself, hopefully, this year," she said before she started to cry again. "Ew, I'm crying! Happy Hanukkah!" she exclaimed before hopping away from the mic.
Congrats, Ariana! We love you, girl.
