(Abbeville, Louisiana) - Crawfish is part of our culture in South Louisiana, and Abbeville High School is educating its students about the industry by using a pond on its campus.

If you're from Acadiana, you already know that the crawfish industry is huge across our region, and many farmers in our area make great money by harvesting crawfish.

So, it is only fitting that a local high school educates some of its students on the industry and how to harvest crawfish.

I recently saw a post on social media by Abbeville High School thanking Jeff Meaux from AK Drone Service for his time caring for the pond. Apparently, an armyworm infestation in the pond could harm the rice, and Meaux applied a safe, well-tolerated insecticide to rid it of the armyworm.

While I love seeing the community assist one another in the time of need, I also love that Abbeville High School has a crawfish pond on its campus for students to learn about the crawfish industry.

Abbeville High Crawfish Pond

The pond is located behind the high school, and students in agriculture class use it to get hands-on experience.  Sure, you can read or watch videos on how to raise and harvest crawfish all day, but until you get hands-on experience, you truly don't know how challenging it can be to raise and harvest crawfish.

When I called the high school to confirm they have a pond on campus, I asked the young lady who answered what they do with the crawfish they catch. She told me that if they have enough crawfish, the students sell them to raise funds for the agriculture department at Abbeville High.

However, if they don't have enough to sell, the agriculture department hosts a crawfish boil for the class. I assume that learning how to boil what they harvest is also part of this great program.

Check out a few photos of the pond at Abbeville High School being treated for the armyworm infestation, and I hope that the students have a great harvest this upcoming season.

When Farmers Harvest Crawfish

Louisiana farmers harvest crawfish starting in November, and the season runs through July. The peak of the season is March through May.
