You know how us Cajuns are here in Acadiana. We are always looking forward to an ice-cold beer. That’s why I smiled when I saw the photo of this grandmother drinking a Bud Light to celebrate that she beat the coronavirus. Jennie Stejna was the first to test positive for COVID-19 in her nursing home in Massachusetts. Her first symptom was a low-grade fever and she was moved to a separate ward.

Shelley Gunn told USA Today that her grandmother was Polish and she has a feisty spirit. She said Stejna was a “hardcore Boston sports fan”, an avid bingo player and loved to crochet and read. Gunn said her grandmother didn’t really understand COVID-19 but she did know that she was very sick. The 103-year-old eventually started to decline as her condition became worse. Gunn said the nursing home called her to let her know they should go in to say their final goodbyes. Shelley’s husband, Adam Gunn, asked if she was ready to go to heaven and she replied “Hell yes.” Shelley thanked her grandmother for all she had done for her and they said their goodbyes.

On May 13, Shelley said she got a call with unbelievable news. She was told her grandmother had recovered. Naturally, the family was incredibly happy and so thankful to have more time with Stejna. The nursing home still has patients with the coronavirus, but Stejna was the first resident in that nursing home to recover. Stejna has two children, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

I can't think of a better way to celebrate beating COVID-19 and having more time to spend with all of her loved ones than to drink a Bud Light. The nursing home staff gave Ms. Jennie Stejna an ice-cold Bud Light to celebrate, which is something she loved and hadn’t had in a long time according to Gunn.
