Halloween's a lot of fun for people of all ages. It can also be dangerous. Candles and other open flames pose the greatest risk. The NFPA reports there are approximately 1,000 home fires every Halloween usually ignited by decorations. These fires result in an average of 6 deaths, 53 injuries, and 16 million dollars in property damage.

The Louisiana Fire Marshall's Office has these tips:

  • Use glow sticks or battery-powered candles, rather than candles that produce an actual flame.
  • Keep crepe paper, dried flowers, and other flammable materials away from any heat source, including light bulbs.
  • Avoid billowy costumes or ones with long trailers.
  • Teach children to drop and roll, should their costume catch fire.
  • Don't block exits with decorations.
