Described by an Iowa Senator as "emblematic of the greatness of the fair", the traditional 'butter cow' sculpture was vandalized earlier this week.

The group "Iowans for Animal Liberation" claimed responsibility for the spraying the butter sculpture with red paint, representing

"the blood of 11 billion animals murdered each year in slaughterhouses, egg farms, and dairies."

The vandals also spray-painted the words "Freedom for All" on a glass window of the display.

No arrests have been made, but in an email, the vandals claimed that they hid in the building until after it closed.  The paint was cleaned up and the sculpture was touched up by the time the building re-opened at 9am.

No word yet if they will be deep-frying the sculpture for dessert.
