Woman In Central Park Calls Police On Man Who Asked Her To Put Her Dog On A Leash

Social media is reacting to a viral video of a white woman who called the cops on a black man after he requested that she put her dog on a leash.

The issue had less to do with her reaction to the dog situation but instead, the highly questionable manner in which the woman planned on retaliating against the man, identified by Complex as Christian Cooper.

The woman, identified as Amy Cooper (no relation to Christian), can be heard saying "I'm gonna tell them there's an African American man threatening my life," before dialing 911. This is extremely problematic for multiple reasons but mostly due to the fact that the man doesn't appear to show any sign of being aggressive toward the woman nor does he make any threats.

There is an African-American man, I'm in Central park, he is recording me, and threatening myself and my dog... I'm being threatened by a man in the Ramble please send the cops immediately.

Video of the encounter was shared on social media and has since gone viral with many commenters outraged at the woman's calculated use of the "race card."

As more and more people weighed in on social media, many called for her arrest for filing a false police report while others called for her to be fired from her job over her attempt to put the man's life in jeopardy.

Christian's sister Melody posted the video to Twitter pointing out that the specific area did indeed call for dogs to be on a leash.

Oh, when Karens take a walk with their dogs off leash in the famous Bramble [sic] in NY’s Central Park, where it is clearly posted on signs that dogs MUST be leashed at all times, and someone like my brother (an avid birder) politely asks her to put her dog on the leash," Melody Cooper wrote in her tweet.

Police responded to the woman's call but no arrests were made. A spokesperson with the NYPD said no arrests were made and "both parties went on their way."

Upon arrival, police determined two individuals had engaged in a verbal dispute. There were no arrests or summonses issued and both parties went on their way.

Christian, described by his sister as an "avid birder," spoke with NBC New York about why he requested the woman put a leash on her dog.

If the habitat is destroyed we won’t be able to go there to see the birds, to enjoy the plantings. The only way they can keep the dog from eating the treat is to put it on a leash... At some point, she decided I’m gonna play the race card, I guess.

Social media users quickly figured out that Amy Cooper worked at Franklin Templeton, an investment firm that released a statement acknowledging the viral video and saying Cooper has been placed on administrative leave.

Complex also reports that Amy Cooper has returned her dog to the Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue after many also criticized the way she handled the dog.

Reactions to the video continue to pour in as viewers fumed over the woman's actions that many described as "dangerous," calling for her to be charged for reporting a false crime.

Facebook user Jean Louis summed up the recklessness of Amy Cooper's actions with his comment.
