Watch Lafayette Police Officers Heroically Lift Car Off of Fellow Cop After it Dragged Him Nearly 100 Yards

A Lafayette Police officer is currently hospitalized after he was run over and dragged nearly 100 feet during a traffic stop over the weekend.

The incident happened just before 1:30 a.m. this past Sunday in the 400 block of Jefferson Street near Garfield Street. A harrowing scene quickly unfolded when police say 24-year-old Jaylin Chavis attempted to flee during a traffic stop.

Once he encountered a roadblock, Chavis put his car in reverse and ran over a Lafayette Police Officer in his attempt to get away before another officer was able to fire rounds at his vehicle and get him to stop.

All of this took place near one of the busiest intersections in Downtown Lafayette which made Chavis' actions just that much more dangerous as crowds witnessed the chaos while retreating to safety.

Multiple people were filming cell phone videos but one in particular captured a heroic moment when multiple law enforcement officers physically picked up the suspect's car to free their fellow officer who had been violently dragged and was still pinned underneath.

The officer was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but as of the latest update from Lafayette Police, was in stable condition. Multiple people close to the situation tell me that the officer was stable, but is still suffering from "significant injuries" and is "not out of the woods yet."

24-year-old Jaylin Chavis of Lake Charles, LA was arrested and booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, reckless operation of a vehicle, resisting an officer with force/violence, and OWI (first offense).

Thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of his fellow officers at LPD and LPSO, the Lafayette cop who was critically injured in this incident was given a fighting chance; and even in the best-case scenario of a full recovery, the officer will be unable to work or be compensated for extra details (like his work after hours in Downtown Lafayette) that he relied on to support his family for the time being.
