Timing Today’s Severe Weather Threat in South Louisiana
For the past few days we've been sounding a lot like Ollie Williams, you know the weatherman who very succinctly offers a forecast of "It's Gonna Rain" on TVs Family Guy. I feel very confident in saying, but not at the same decibel level as Ollie, today, It's Gonna Rain!
Now, the question for most of us is when and how hard?
As you know weather forecasting is not an exact science but with today's modern computer modeling forecasters can give us a pretty close approximation of when and where the worst of a weather system will strike. Most of Louisiana is currently in the "slight risk" zone for severe weather today according to the Storm Prediction Center.
So, it's a pretty safe bet that at some time today we'll get some heavy rain, some gusty winds, a little bit of lightning, some thunder, and maybe even a tornado. The better question is no longer "if" but "when".
KATC Chief Meteorologist Rob Perillo has been running a myriad of forecast models in the Storm Team Three Weather Lab and some of the more reliable model solutions put South Louisiana under the gun for strong storms from carpool time after school today until just before sundown early this evening.
The HRRR Model, used frequently by the meteorologists at KATC suggests that the worst of the weather will move into western sections of Acadiana between two and four pm today. The storm system will push eastward across the region and should be affecting the greater Lafayette area between four and six pm. Most of the stronger storms should exit eastern sections of Acadiana sometime after eight pm.
Forecasters with the Storm Prediction Center say that the northern sections of Acadiana, basically the Highway 190 corridor north will have a better chance of seeing strong storms than locations closer to the coast.
The good news is that once this system clears the area we should have some incredible weather for the end of the workweek and into the weekend. This might be just the break you've been needing to get some outside time in the yard and then sit back and enjoy your handiwork with a nice glass of wine. By nice, we mean cheap
