Steve Wiley Reflects On The Challenger Disaster [Video]

"Obviously a major malfunction"...Those  words are indelibly etched in my memory. I was on the air at KTDY when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. It was January 28th, 1986. A visibly excited (or agitated) Allen Aubert, from our news station KPEL, burst into the studio, hopping from one foot to the other like a little boy who needed to hurry to the bathroom. He urgently asked, "When can you break in??" My response, "I just started a  music sweep. Get the Hell out of here."  Allen stopped jumping around, and said "The space shuttle just blew up!" Radio people are notorious pranksters & I didn't buy it. My response can't be printed here. Suffice it to say I rudely suggested he leave my studio. Allen persisted, and eventually convinced to go across the hall, where several co workers were watching in stunned disbelief....
