Tom Cruise received his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role as paralyzed Vietnam Vet Ron Kovic. "Born On The Fourth Of July" also netted Oliver Stone his second Oscar for best director.

Charlie Sheen claims Stone originally offered the part to him. Sheen told The Hollywood reporter, "He said Al Pacino wanted to do the movie, De Niro wanted to -- everybody wanted to -- and ‘I'm going to give you this movie.'" Former New York Times film critic Caryn James said Sheen would have been great for the part but he'd chosen some bad projects, and added,  "I have to guess that his personal life led him off that track. What a waste of talent."
