The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Louisiana at some risk for severe storms today and especially this evening into Friday morning. The worst of the storms are expected across the northwest corner of the state. In the graphic above you can see the Shreveport/Bossier City area is included in a moderate risk for severe storms today.

Cities such as Monroe and Alexandria are at an enhanced risk of severe storms while the areas roughly between Alexandria and Opelousas have been given a slight risk of severe storms. We should note that Lake Charles is also included in that slight risk region as well.

You can visualize the ariel description of the forecast area much better in the graphic above from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles The Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans metropolitan areas are at a marginal risk for severe storms today as well.

And based on forecast models it does appear as if the southern parishes of Louisiana will escape the worst of what Mother Nature dishes out later today and into the evening. As of now, the NWS is suggesting the best time for bad weather in cities such as Lafayette, Crowley, and New Iberia will come between midnight and 3 AM Friday morning.

So, don't be surprised if you're startled from your slumber this evening by a few loud claps of thunder and flashes of brilliant lightning. The good news, at least for the I-10 corridor is that the showers and storms should move through quickly and in many places skies may already be clear by the time the sun comes up.

Behind this storm system, all of Louisiana can expect a return to more seasonable weather conditions. It will seem much cooler compared to the near-record high temperatures the area has experienced over the past week.
