School Enrollment Rebounds Following Deadly 2016 Flooding

LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) — Student enrollment in a Louisiana parish has returned to levels it hasn't experienced since devastating floods three years ago.

WAFB-TV reports Livingston Parish school Superintendent Joe Murphy says 26,150 students had been enrolled as of Friday morning. More than a dozen people died and thousands lost their homes to flooding in August 2016 .

The Advocate reports 19 schools were damaged during the flood and 16 have since been restored. The Federal Emergency Management Agency determined the other three were substantially damaged and will require a more in-depth remediation process.

The district has added 22 new school buses, replacing many water-damaged vehicles.

School board president Buddy Mincey says he thinks some displaced families have been returning and recent development has also attracted new families to the area.
