Officials at Atmos Energy want to remind everyone of some things to keep in mind when you are using natural gas during times of severe weather.

Many homes in Louisiana have gas, and it comes in very handy if your electricity goes off to be able to cook a hot meal along with being able to boil water.

There are several things to keep in mind though in the event of flooding of any of your gas appliances.

Atmos Energy Vice President of Pipeline Safety, John McDill says it critical for customers to remember that if there is flooding, you should contact a professional.

He says,

Atmos Energy wants you and your family to be safe in any situation. If your home or business is affected by flooding, tropical storms, hurricanes or a similar event, we want to remind customers to not use natural gas equipment if it is flooded or damaged without first contacting a qualified service person to have it inspected.

Here are some of the things they want residents to know:

  • Anytime you think you smell gas, just leave right away, and then when you are a safe distance from your house or business, call 911.
  • Never use a cell phone or any other item that can cause a spark, especially around your gas generator.
  • Never turn off natural gas at the meter even if you are told to evacuate.
  • Don't ever try to find the source of a gas leak yourself; that should be left up to professionals.
  • Atmos Energy workers are considered essential personnel, and as soon as they are allowed by local authorities to go to affect areas, they will begin their work.
  • If any of your gas appliances are flooded, you should not use them, but you should contact Atmos Energy right away.
  • If you see the gas line is damaged or exposed, you need to call Atmos as soon as possible.
  • You should know where your gas meter is, and you should make sure that it is free of any trash.
  • If you experience an outage, you should call Atmos at 888-286-6700.
