Former long-time Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson has been offered a 1-year deal to coach the LSU defensive line this season, according to Brooks Kupena of The Advocate. The deal awaits a background check before becoming official.

Johnson, 64, is a Monroe native who began his coaching career in 1980 as a grad assistant at Northwestern State after a 4-year career with the Demons.

He served as the Saints DL coach from 2009 to 2016, earning a Super Bowl ring in his first season with the franchise.

Ironically, when Johnson took the job with the Saints, he was replacing LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, who served as DL coach in New Orleans in 2008.

As of now, Johnson's agreement with LSU is a short one because it's in a temporary replacement capacity.

LSU DL coach Dennis Johnson suffered acute knee injuries this summer playing pickup basketball, and is currently confined to a wheelchair as he recovers from surgery.
