(Lafayette, Louisiana) - If you suffer from allergies in South Louisiana, we have some very bad news to share with you here.

Like many of you, the start of Spring has been very difficult for my family and me as we are all suffering from allergies. We've all been sneezing non-stop, blowing our noses, and even battling post-nasal drips, which causes a sore throat.

While we all love being outdoors at this time of year because of the longer days and milder temperatures, you can't help but worry about the pollen, which seems to be everywhere.

I don't know if you've looked at your vehicle or patio at home, but they are covered in pollen. Just a few days ago, I washed my vehicle, which is a darker color, and two days later, I was left scratching my head as to why it was already dirty---it's pollen,

Yes, plants and trees are producing a lot of pollen now, which isn't the best news for those with allergies, and for those in Acadiana, the news gets worse. There's no rain in the extended forecast, which means pollen levels will remain very high in the area.

Rob Periillo from KATC TV-3 recently shared a graphic highlighting pollen levels in Acadiana, and the news isn't good. According to the graphic below, the pollen count is very high for trees, which explains why you've been sneezing so much or experiencing nasal congestion.

Again, with little to no rain in the extended forecast, sure, we will have gorgeous weather in the days ahead, but pollen levels will remain very high, and you know what that already means, more days of misery.

So, prepare for more sneezing and watery eyes as we enter Spring, but there are a few things you can do to combat pollen and allergies during this time of year.

What to Do to Combat Allergies

According to the Mayo Clinic, one thing you should do if you suffer from allergies is secure your home and make sure you're not opening windows at the peak of pollen season.

In addition, if you suffer from allergies, it's wise to shower immediately upon returning to your home. Yes, get the pollen off of you as soon as you can.

Plus, I know many of you may not want to do this, but using protective facial gear (a mask) while doing yard work and working in the gardens can help prevent you from inhaling pollen that can trigger your allergies.

During peak pollen season at home, make sure to use high-efficiency air filters for your air circulation, and remember to change them regularly.

Lastly, while you fight off the pollen during Spring and Summer, you may need to take antihistamines regularly and even consider asking your doctor about allergy shots. It's also advised that you use a good nasal navigation system to keep your sinuses clean.

Until then, enjoy Spring, it truly is the most beautiful season of the year, and keep your Kleenex nearby, you'll likely need it.
