LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Police in southwestern Louisiana have arrested the parents of a 2-month-old who died after being brought to the hospital with severe injuries.

Local media report the police said in a news release Monday that parents brought the girl and her twin brother to the hospital. Both were injured, and the girl died on March 30. The boy's condition was not immediately available.

State child welfare officials conducted an investigation and then contacted police.

Lafayette police arrested 23-year-old Ayana Ladelle and 24-year-old Dwayne Richard on Monday on charges of first-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to juveniles.

It was not known if the two had lawyers.
