Don't put your garbage out on New Year's Day. Due to the holiday, the waste collection schedule is changing up for next week. Tuesday through Friday customers of Allied Waste and the Recycling Foundation in Lafayette Parish will see changes to their waste collection schedule for the week of the New Year holiday. Regular Monday customers will receive their regularly scheduled garbage and recycling collection during the day of New Year’s Eve.
Allied Waste and the Recycling Foundation will observe the New Year holiday on Tuesday, so Tuesday through Friday customers will receive garbage and recycling collection on the day following their regularly scheduled collection day. The adjusted schedule includes regular Friday customers receiving garbage and recycling collection on Saturday, Jan. 5.
All customers served by Allied Waste will receive excess garbage collection, resulting from holiday celebrations, on their first service day following New Year’s Day. Once the automated garbage cart is full, residents may bag garbage and place it on the ground three feet from the cart. Large boxes which contained Christmas gifts may also be placed on the ground for collection. Boxes should contain only the original packing material in otherwise empty boxes. Garbage should not be placed in boxes.
Natural Christmas trees should be cleaned of all lights and ornaments, and placed curbside for collection by Allied Waste. There is no deadline for putting out Christmas trees, as they are collected on residents’ regular yard waste collection day, which coincides with garbage collection. Old trees will be brought to the city-parish government compost facility to be processed into mulch.
Residents in apartments, without curbside waste collection, may drop a cleaned, natural Christmas tree for free at the Lafayette Consolidated Government Compost Facility at 400 Dugas Rd. through January. Retail stores may drop unused trees at the compost facility, but there is a charge of $6 per cubic yard.
The compost facility will close at 3:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, remaining closed on New Year’s Day, and will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7 a.m.
