Researchers at the University of New Mexico may have found a way to prevent Alzheimer's Disease.

Kiran Bhaskar and his team have begun testing a vaccine on Mice.

Student Nicole Maphis says that the vaccine was designed with a particular protein in mind. A protein that is commonly found in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. The vaccine targets this protein and aids in clearing it.

The test mice were given a set of maze-like tests. The ones who received the vaccine performed better than those who did not.

Right now Maphis and Bhaskar are looking into partnerships to help raise money to get access to a clinical grade vaccine. Once the vaccine is deemed safe for humans, the group will submit to the FDA for approval.

This could take at least 5 more years.
