LSU Downs Texas In Offensive Show

The LSU Tigers made school history on Saturday night.

6th-ranked LSU defeated 9th-ranked Texas, 45-38, for its first-ever road game victory against a non-conference Associated Press Top 10 opponent.

Prior to Saturday night, the Tigers were 0-11 all-time against AP Top-10 ranked non-conference opponents on the road.

LSU got on the scoreboard first, when Cade York booted through a 36-yard field goal, capping off an 11-play, 71-yard drive, giving them a 3-0 lead at the 8:04 mark of the opening quarter.

Texas took the lead at the 10:29 mark fo the second quarter, when Sam Ehlinger connected with Brannan Eagles on a 55-yard touchdown pass, completing an 8-play, 78-yard drive, to give them a 7-3 advantage.

The Tigers got the ball back and scored on their next possession, courtesy of 6-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Justin Jefferson, ending an 8-play, 75-yard drive, to give them the lead back, 10-7, at the  7:20 mark of the second period.

LSU extended their advantage to 13-7 at the 1:41 mark of the second quarter, when York made good on his second field goal of the evening, this one from 33 yards away, wrapping up a 10-play, 65-yard drive.

The Tigers got the ball back and scored on a 3-play, 58-yard drive, when Burrow tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jefferson, to make it 20-7 at the :47 mark of the second quarter.

That was the final points of the opening half, as LSU took a 13-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Longhorns drew closer at the 6:51 mark of the third quarter, when Ehlinger scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, capping off an impressive 18-play, 86-yard drive, to cut the LSU lead to 20-14.

LSU scored their first points of the second half at the 5:30 mark fo the third quarter, when York booted through his third field goal of the night, this one from 40 yards out, to widen their advantage to 23-14.

Texas got to within two points at the 2:36 mark of the 2:36 mark of the third quarter, when Ehlinger hit Jake Smith with a touchdown pass from 20 yards out, completing a 7-play, 75-yard drive, to cut the deficit to 23-21.

The two teams then continued to trade touchdowns.

The Tigers got into the endzone at the 14:52 mark of the 4th quarter, when Burrow threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Terrace Marshall, making it 30-21.

The Longhorns answered right back, at the 12:09 mark fo the final frame, when Ehlinger tossed a 44-yard scoring strike to Devin Duvernay, to get them to within two points once again, 30-28.

LSU responded themselves at the 9:58 mark of the 4th quarter, when Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored on a 12-yard run, to extend their lead to 37-28.

Texas made it a one-score game at the 3:59 mark of the 4th quarter, when Cameron Dicker made good on a 47-yard field goal, to make it 37-31.

The Tigers put the game away at the 2:27 mark of the 4th quarter, when Burrow and Jefferson teamed up on their third touchdown pass of the evening, this one from 61 yards, ending a 6-play, 75-yard drive.

After a successful 2-point conversion, LSU led it, 45-31.

Texas made things interesting, at the :22 mark of the 4th quarter, when Ehlinger hit Duvernay with a 15-yard TD pass, to make it 45-38.

That turned out to be the final score of the game, however, as the Tigers walked out of Austin, Texas with the 7-point triumph.

LSU ended up outgaining Texas, in terms of total yards, 573-530, in a game that didn't lack for offense.

Burrow led the way for the Tigers, throwing for 471 yards and 4 TD's, while Jefferson caught 9 passes for 163 yards and three scores.

In a losing cause for Texas, Ehlinger threw for 401 yards and 4 touchdowns.

With the victory, LSU improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Texas fell to 1-1.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday night when they host Northwestern St. in a non-conference battle.
