Some businesses operating under the "Safe Shop" policy got a visit from Lafayette Police Officers who were out to ensure they were following the guidance set forth by the Mayor-President. The department says it offered advice and solutions to any business that was not in compliance with this week's proclamation.

The new guidance, spelled out in a Thursday press briefing, falls within the Governor's stay-at-home order. Among the requirements: employees must wear masks, social distancing must be practiced inside stores and the number of customers is limited to 25% of the permitted maximum capacity according to the state fire marshal.

Compliance checks are set to continue through next week. At this time, the Governor's stay-at-home order is set to expire on April 30th, but that date could be extended based on the trend of new cases and hospitalizations in the state.

Lafayette Police Department officers conducted COVID-19 Business Compliance checks throughout the city today.  These checks were to make sure that Lafayette businesses are adhering to the Governor’s Emergency Order and Proclamations and Mayor-President Josh Guillory’s “Safe Shop Guidance”.  Officers provided advice and solutions to business owners to assist them with coming into compliance or constructing a plan for the business.  Officers found the majority of businesses in compliance.  These compliance checks will continue through the weekend and all of next week.

It is still critical that we continue to practice social distancing during this public health emergency. This will help slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.  If you visit a business where you will not be able to guard against social distancing, we urge you to wear a mask and gloves.
