Rover.com is a website that helps connect people who love pets with people who are looking for different types of care for their fur friends.

They have compiled a list of the ten list of "The Most Popular Dog Breed List" for this year.

If you look at the website barkpost.com they list the most popular dog in the state as the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Now, it is true that the state dog of Louisiana is the Catahoula Leopard Dog, but I don't know anyone who has one.

That's no knock to anyone who does own this breed of dog, I just haven't come across any locally.

These are certainly beautiful dogs.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog has been our state dog since 1979. Barkspot.com says it is believed "to be the first breed developed in North America".

If you love dogs as much as I do then you will have one of the dogs on this list, no doubt. I find that so many people in Acadiana love animals, and we go out of our way to help animals that need extra help.

#10 - Yorkshire Terrier.

The American Kennel Club reports that Yorkshire Terrier dogs are great dogs for families because they are terrific with kids. They are considered to be very affectionate dogs that will love everyone in your family. AKC also says they are good with other dogs.

They live between 11 and 15 years, and they typically weigh around 7 pounds. The American Kennel Club says while the breed is sweet they can also be a little bossy and tenacious. One thing is for sure, they have our hearts.

#9 - Dachshund

PetMd.com describes dachshund dogs as "willful, headstrong, playful, and mischievous." These dogs are so much fun. Many of us refer to them as "wiener" dogs or "hot dogs" because they are so long.

The whole intent behind breeding these dogs is so they could chase prey that could be dangerous to the rest of us.

The American Kennel Club says a standard-size dachshund can be between 16 to 32 pounds while the little miniature doxies can weigh anywhere from 11 pounds and under.

They are good with children, your family, and other dogs.

#8 - French bulldog.

The French Bulldog is described as being a good choice if you have children because they will get along well with them according to Rover.com. In addition, they are not big howlers, so you don't have to worry about them disturbing your neighbors if you live in an apartment setting.

Frenchis, Rover.com says, are super affectionate, friendly pooches who love to be with their human families. They will get along well with your other dogs and even cats.

They are so cute!

#7 - Shih Tzu.

Full disclosure, I have a beautiful and feisty Shih Tzy named "Gracie" and she is so sweet. But, she is also super stubborn. Gracie runs the house!

Rover.com says the breed is very good with children. They will typically weigh between 9 and 16 pounds.

Did you know they are also called, "the little lion" and "the lion dog" according to Rover.com. As an owner, I can totally understand this. Gracie is not afraid of anything. If she thinks you might touch me she will chew your arm off! Hahahahaha!

Each dog on this list is a wonderful breed. They are all so loving!

#6 - Chihuahua.

If you are thinking of adopting a dog then you can't go wrong if you decide to open your home up to a chihuahua. Rover.com says this breed of dog is happy and with their loyalty, they are a good breed for your family and your children.

They are small dogs, but they are fiercely loyal. One thing you do need to consider with this breed is that they do tend to bark. They will make sure that everyone hears if they aren't happy.

These dogs are small and usually weigh ten pounds or less according to Rover.com.

#5 - German Shepherd.

German Shepherds are beautiful dogs who typically weigh between 50 and 90 pounds according to Rover.com. They are very good with children, and they are pretty active pets. You will get a workout taking them for a daily walk.

German Shepherds are great at patrolling and protecting your property, and with their bark, they help maintain your property if someone is coming near to it. Intruders will think twice before they decide to "visit" your house.

While each dog is different, you will have to make sure that you make grooming a priority for your dog as they can have a pretty heavy coat.

#4 - Golden Retriever

Another wonderful dog on the list is the Golden Retriever. These sweet and friendly dogs are a great addition to your family as they are very good with children.

Golden retrievers typically weigh between 65 and 75 pounds. They can have quite a loud bark according to Rover.com, but their sweet disposition makes them very compatible with most situations.

Be ready to take plenty of walks and Golden Retrievers need plenty of exercise.

#3 - Goldendoodle

Even the name sounds nice. Goldendoodle are sweet-natured dogs who are happy to be added to your family.

Goldendoodle are people pleasers according to Rover.com. They are super sweet around children, and they love to play.

They weigh typically between 50 and 100 pounds. Rover says their size is really dependent on what kind of poodle size is part of their heritage.

#2 - Labrador Retriever

If you have always wanted a high-energy dog for your family then the Labrador Retriever is for you.

These dogs will get along great with your children and your cats! How great is that! As far as their size, they usually range in age from 55 pounds to 88 pounds.

Labs are dogs that will take time when it comes to grooming, but they will love on your family so much that you won't even care!

#1 - Mixed-Breed

Rover.com identifies a mixed-breed dog as "a cross between three or more different dog breeds."

Shelters throughout Acadiana are full of dogs who are mixed-breed dogs, and all they need is your love and care.

My first dog, Buddy, was a mixed-breed dog. He was part Beagle, Dachshund, and Terrier, and he was a true angel.

When I had Buddy there was no such thing as DNA testing your dog. Now, you can have your pooch tested. Isn't that great?
