I think we would all agree, the start to the 2020 school year will be a challenge.

The Lafayette Parish School System has voted to continue with plans and to start the school year on August 17th. Yes, the option to utilize distant learning in Lafayette Parish is an option for parents.

But how do members of the Lafayette Parish Association of Educators feel about starting class in August and are they comfortable getting back into the classroom during the coronavirus pandemic?

Our media partners at KATC TV-3 report on a survey taken by 1,000 members of the LPAE and here are the results:

• 49.6% of our membership self-identified as high risk or increased risk for COVID 19 complications.
• 64.7% of our membership felt it would be safest to return 100% virtual.
• 78.2% support pushing back the start of school to after Labor Day.
• 72.4% support committing to virtual for the first 9 weeks.

LPAE president Julia Reed tells KATC TV-3 that they will work with the school board if they elect to start the school year on time, but they do want the board to be aware of how some of the educators and staff members feel about starting in-person instructions.

The results as seen above have reportedly been shared with the LPSS.
