Man Arrested for Attempted Murder in Lafayette Vigil Shooting

Lafayette Police arrest suspect in Debaillon Park shooting that injured a young girl during a memorial service. Attempted murder charge filed.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) — A second arrest has been made in the ongoing investigation into a Sunday night shooting that left a six-year-old injured.

According to Lafayette Police Det. Ken Handy, Kimmy Ray Dauntain Jr. was arrested Thursday afternoon and has been charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder. LPD previously arrested Daylon Andrus on Wednesday evening.

LPD reports that at around 4:40 p.m., officers located a vehicle matching the description of a suspect wanted for the shooting. Dauntain was taken to the police department, where he was formally arrested.

Lafayette Police have arrested Daylon Andrus in connection with the shooting of a 6-year-old girl at a community vigil Sunday night.

Andrus has been booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of attempted second-degree murder.

The incident remains under investigation. Police stated additional findings will be provided through updated press releases.

A 6-year-old girl is now in stable condition after being shot during a vigil against gun violence at Debaillon Park Sunday night, marking a tragic irony as the community gathered to mourn another recent shooting victim.

According to our news partners at KATC TV-3, the young girl was critically injured when gunfire erupted during a memorial service for Phillip Francis Jr., 44, who was fatally shot Friday at the WoodSpring Suites hotel. The Lafayette Police Department provided an update on the child's condition, stating she has improved from critical to stable condition.

Police Investigation Details

Lafayette Police provided an update stating the 6-year-old female victim is now in stable condition. The investigation remains ongoing.

According to police, investigators do not believe there is any connection between the hotel shooting and the shooting at Debaillon Park.

Community Impact

The vigil was organized by friends and family to remember Francis. A Lafayette man has been arrested and booked with manslaughter in connection with Francis' death.
