Argument Turns Deadly in Iberia Parish: Man Arrested Following Brother’s Fatal Shooting

A man has been arrested in Iberia Parish on charges of second-degree murder after an alleged argument with his brother turned fatal. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Investigation detectives were called to a residence on Coteau Road in the evening hours of October 12, 2023, after reports of a deceased male in the backyard.

Upon investigation, it was determined that James Nic Derouen, a 53-year-old male, had fatally shot his brother during a heated argument. The motives and details surrounding the dispute remain under investigation.

Following the discovery and preliminary investigations, James Nic Derouen was taken into custody and charged under LA RS 14:30.1 for second-degree murder. He has since been booked into the Iberia Parish Jail with a bond set at $502,000.

On October 12, 2023, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Investigation detectives responded to a home in the 6000 block of Coteau Road in reference to a deceased male located in the backyard of the residence. Through investigation, IPSO detectives learned that James Nic Derouen (male, 53 yrs. old) shot his brother during an argument.
