Yelp Lists Best Sandwich in Every State – Here’s Louisiana’s
In Louisiana, we love to discuss food. In some cases, our arguments for and against certain foods reach rather intense levels. But for the most part, if you want someone in Shreveport to hush, you can shove some pie from Strawn's Eat Shop in their face that'll do it. In Lafayette, a shrimp po-boy from Old Tyme Grocery would do the trick as well.
And while we do love talking about food in Louisiana, we should caution you, that we will have to speak with our mouths full because some of our great recipes can't wait for idle conversation to be consumed. The folks at the internet review site Yelp love to talk about food too.
Okay, the folks that subscribe to Yelp, like to talk about food and in a lot of cases they are dead wrong when it comes to identifying the best "local offerings". Pick a random city and search a basic term like "lunch", "burgers", or "sandwiches" and you'll see a lot of choices that aren't choices at all.
They are fast food chains and while those restaurants serve their purpose they aren't really what you were looking for when you wanted to "get the taste of a specific town or region".
Now that we've quantified the Yelp process, let's take a look at what the Internet review site found out when it comes to sandwiches, especially here in the South. In Alabama, Yelp reviewers liked the Cuban Sandwich at Kook Korner Sandwiches in Vestavia Hills.
In Arkansas, the Yelp nod went to American Artisans Eatery and Gallery in Mena Arkansas. Mena is in western Arkansas near the Oklahoma line. It's about halfway between Texarkana and Fort Smith. The sandwich the Yelpers loved was the Funky Chicken. It's a grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese. It sounds pretty good.
The choice of Yelp in Mississippi was from Biloxi. It's a Reuben sandwich from The Grind Coffee and Nosh. Kathy's Kickin' Reuben is very similar to a traditional Reuben sandwich but there is a kick. It comes from the horseradish cream sauce they use.
Louisiana's best sandwich according to Yelp comes from the Milk Bar in New Orleans. It's the Muffaletta that they pictured but based on the menu that sandwich might be one of the weakest links. There's the Christmas in July sandwich, the Psycho Chicken, the Occidental Oriental, and a host of others.
I can see why the muffuletta was the chosen one, it's a New Orleans tradition and I am sure a lot of visitors to the Milk Bar choose it because it's a touristy thing to try. The Milk Bar is located on South Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans if you'd like to look it up.
