Severe Storms, Flooding Rains to Impact Louisiana Sunday

The National Weather Service is once again cautioning residents of Louisiana to be prepared for the possibility of severe storms, some with heavy downpours and possible tornadoes moving into the state as early as Sunday. Cities such as Shreveport, Leesville, and Lake Charles are more likely to be affected by strong storms Sunday.

The threat of severe storms and excessive rainfall will move across the entire state on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has once again placed all of Louisiana at risk for severe storms on Monday. The SPC has placed the risk at slight. Here's what that means.

As of now the forecast calls for increasing rain chances in northwestern Louisiana during the day on Sunday. This increased threat of rain and storms will slowly expand eastward covering the entire state by Sunday night.

That's when the threat of severe storms and excessive rain will become more prominent across Louisiana. By Monday, the forecasters say no matter where you are in Louisiana you are subject to the threat of gusty winds, frequent lighting, small hail, damaging winds, and the potential for some rotating storms too.

Louisiana will get a bit of a break from showers and storms on Tuesday but don't let your guard down because forecasters have already identified the next storm threat. The graphic below from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles details what you could expect across the state as early as Wednesday into Thursday.

Louisiana has already had an active meteorological spring and the trend appears to be showing even more opportunities for showers, storms, and severe weather to continue over the next two to three weeks. And that trend appears to be setting up for the first two months of summer as well.

Data from the Climate Prediction Center suggests that Louisiana will receive above average rainfall and while there is no guarantee we are almost certainly assured that some of that rain will come in the form of strong thunderstorms.

As for Mom's special day, it won't be a washout. Especially if you have your Mother's Day celebrations planned for the middle of the day. The further east you are in Louisiana the less likely the threat that outdoor plans will have to be rushed inside.
