Popular Pet Store Closing Locations Nationwide – Any in Louisiana or Texas?
(KMDL-FM) According to industry figures, pet-related spending in America has risen by 90% over the past two decades. The average American with a pet can expect to spend, on average, $876 every year to make sure that the pet is fed, groomed, housed, and its health is maintained.
For most of us, when we say the word "pet," our minds instantly create the image of a dog or a cat. In Louisiana, about 38% of households have a dog, and 19% of homes have a cat. Meanwhile, in Texas, the disparity between cat and dog ownership is even greater, with only 20.5% of Texas houses sharing space with a cat. Meanwhile, you can find dogs in 40.3% of Texas homes and ranches.

Of course, there are other pets that you can own. For some, it might be a goldfish or a reptile. Others might like to have hamsters, mice, or guinea pigs. But regardless of what your pet is or how big they happen to be, you have to get supplies for them, and that's where the pet stores come into play.
What Popular Pet Store Will Be Closing Locations in 2025?
If I asked you to name a pet store, I would imagine that most of you would reply with PetSmart. PetSmart is the largest pet supply chain in the United States. The chain that occupies the second position in that list is Petco. Petco is the chain that has notified consumers and employees that it intends to shutter locations in 2025.
The fact that Petco is closing stores in 2025 should not come as a shock to industry observers. The chain shuttered 25 locations in 2024, and based on company information, the plan is to shutter at least that many in 2025. Some of the store closures have already been announced and confirmed.
Will Petco Be Closing Locations in Louisiana and Texas?
At least one location in Texas is confirmed to be on the closure list, and there could be more. As of now, the complete list of store closures has not been revealed. According to the Petco website, the chain operates stores in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Covington, Denham Springs, Gonzales, Hammond, Harvey, Houma, Kenner, and Lafayette.

Meanwhile, in Texas, the number of stores is significantly higher. As of this month. Petco is reporting 130 stores in Texas, which represents about 10% of the chain's footprint across the country. Again, one store in Texas has been confirmed to be closing and, in fact, may already be shuttered.
Industry observers expect Petco to offer further information on future store closings or adjustments in the coming weeks, but no particular timetable of when that might occur has been revealed.
