(KMDL-FM) As busy as forecasters have been at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles over the first two months of 2026, they just might be staring down the barrel of their busiest time all year. While winter weather is always "interesting" in Louisiana. It is nothing compared to the volatility that can be included in Louisiana's springtime weather forecasts.

Okay, technically, it is not spring, but we're already preparing for the bi-annual grumbling about having to adjust the clocks ahead one hour, aren't we? During the spring months, Louisiana's forecasts are less about heat and humidity and more about the potential for severe storms, flooding rains, or both.

How Does The Forecast Affect the Current Crawfish Season?

Another aspect of why the conditions in spring are so important in Louisiana is the fragility of the crawfish market and the current crawfish season. We've seen what a drought can do to Louisiana's crawfish industry. We have seen what below-freezing temperatures and snow can do as well.

Of course, the weather affects all of us, not just those of us who enjoy crawfish. Everyday parents have to make plans for school drop off and pick up, and then we need to prepare our own wardrobes for what Mother Nature is about to toss in our general direction.

The bigger concern might be whether Mother Nature go to far and brings too much rain over a short period of time. That is when Louisiana faces its biggest danger, since the topography of the state does not lend itself to draining swiftly and efficiently.

How Much Rain Will Louisiana Get Next Week?

That remains to be seen. As you know, long-range forecasts lose a lot of accuracy when extrapolated over time. So we do anticipate some changes to be made in this forecast as we move into next week.

Confidence is high that there will be a threat of showers and perhaps thunderstorms across the region by the middle or latter part of next week. Check back with us to see if that means flooding rains, relaxing rains, or just enough rain to make people drive like idiots.

Oh, and how is the Groundhog doing with his forecast for springtime? I guess they did just have a blizzard up north, so maybe there is something to the old "whistlepig"
