The brown tarantula goes by a few different names like the Texas brown tarantula, the Mississippi brown tarantula, and of course the Louisiana brown tarantula.
It seems like its name depends on what state it's living, although they are commonly called Texas brown tarantulas when found in Louisiana.
In the U.S., the brown tarantula can be found in:
- Texas
- Louisiana
- Missouri
- Arkansas
- Kansas
- Oklahoma
Brown Tarantula Mating Season
Chances are you had no idea brown tarantulas even live in Louisiana.
That's because they spend most of their time burrowed underground until mating season in late spring and summer.
Although mostly spotted in central and northern Louisiana, they have been spotted in south Louisiana in dry, sandy areas.
According to louisiana.gov -
"Live in many different habitats from forests to grasslands; in Louisiana, it seems to prefer sandy uplands where it burrows under rocks and logs.
Although much more prone to flee and hide than attack, when cornered, this species can inflict a painful bite and may fling urticating hairs, which are irritating to skin and dangerous if cast into the eyes."
The Louisiana tarantula's mating season is in full swing, so if you're going to come across one, this is the time of year when it's most likely.
They primarily travel at night during mating season.
The good news is that if you're not very fond of spiders and tarantulas, they're not very very fond of you, meaning Louisiana brown tarantulas will do everything they can to avoid coming into contact with humans.
Louisiana brown tarantulas are fairly docile creatures and really just want to be left alone.
