(KMDL-FM) Mention the city of Lafayette, Louisiana, and chances are someone will mention music. Someone else might mention food. Someone who lives in and around Lafayette will mention traffic. Because, like Mexican restaurants and carwashes, it's on every street corner we pass.

If there's one thing we know about all of those cars that are on the same streets we're trying to drive down, it's that they all need fuel.

And I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that none of the drivers behind the wheels of those automobiles are looking at how much it's going to cost for their next fill-up. But they are all looking for inside information on how to get the most bang for their gas-buying buck.

The Day of the Week You Fill Up Your Car Matters

Believe it or not, there is some science and some economic theory that goes into knowing which day is a better day for you to fill up your vehicle compared to other days. It does make sense when you stop and think about it. First, let's look at how much we're spending on fuel these days.

The American Automobile Association tracks fuel prices around the country. As of this moment, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States is reported to be $4.16 a gallon. That's actually up two cents from when I first checked the price earlier this morning.

Triple A says the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.72 in Louisiana. If you check apps like Gas Buddy and others, you can find fuel for a few cents cheaper than that in the Lafayette area.

What Is the Worst Day of the Week to Buy Gas For Your Car in Louisiana?

If you can avoid filling your tank on Thursdays, you will find over time you have come out money ahead. The higher prices geared to take advantage of weekend road trips actually start to creep into and onto the pumps late Wednesday. But Thursday if by far the worst day to fill up if you were hoping for a better value with your gasoline purchase.

If Thursday is the worst day of the week and the high prices start building in on Wednesday, then it would stand to reason that the best days to purchase gas are early in the week.

Sundays, according to Gas Buddy, are the best day of the week to fill up if you're hoping for the best prices, that's in general around the country. Perhaps there's just something about a Sunday, or perhaps most stations don't employ people to change the prices on the pumps on a Sunday. I think that might have more to do with it than economics.

Gas Buddy also suggests filling up early on Monday is a good way to take advantage of the better prices on fuel. Actually, here in South Louisiana, Tuesdays aren't a bad choice either, if you look at the stats offered by Gas Buddy.  And if you're traveling outside of Louisiana to Florida, for example, it's better to fill up here. Gas prices are significantly higher in Florida than they are in Louisiana.

There are also some other ways you can stretch your fuel mileage and those dollars you dropped in your fuel tank.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GAS MILEAGE

Gas prices are climbing again, with the national average now sitting around $4.53 a gallon according to AAA, the highest since 2022
So if filling your tank now feels like financing a small yacht, here are a few ways experts say you can stretch every gallon a little farther:
