How the Viral Video of the Atchafalya Basin Bridge Spread Across Platforms

Pick a social media site, and you'll find many videos that have gone viral in a week, but one that allegedly references the columns of the Atchafalaya is not a video of the columns supporting the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

What the Viral Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Video Allegedly Shows

Imagine a video going viral that purports to show major support issues on the I-10 over the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. Many people expressed anger and insisted that action must be taken to address these dangerous conditions. When you click the video, it will show all comments and shares.

Videos on various social media platforms go viral each day for a variety of reasons, but when one is shared multiple times and is not real, it can lead people to believe false information, as with this video from 601andpark that was shared on other platforms.

DOTD Responds to Structural Claims about Atchafalaya Basin Bridge

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Communications Director Rodney Mallet told the Acadiana Advocate that those are not supports from our bridge.

The substructure for the Basin Bridge is not designed that way. Those footing piles are designed differently.

Other Users Explain the Columns in the Video Are Misidentified

In addition to the official word from DOTD, several social media users shared that the video was not authentic.

As is typical of false viral videos, this same video was previously shared by another user with a tag from Caryville, Florida.

As usual, it's a good idea to verify the source of any information on social media.
