‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Author Margaret Atwood Wants Drake Cameo in Season 2
There was a lot to take in with the first season of Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale. Women were brutally subjugated, tortured and killed, amid scenes of political chaos that frighteningly resemble our own world. Through all of it, we and author Margaret Atwood had only one thought: Drake needs to cameo in Season 2, right?
That bit of chicanery aside, finding the Toronto-native rapper a place in Season 2 is very much on Atwood’s mind. In conversation with the Boston Review, Atwood joked off sharing her Toronto fame with the former DeGrassi star, noting that he’d fit right in with the series’ Canadian plotline:
Wouldn’t it be fun for him to have a cameo in season two of The Handmaid’s Tale? […] There you have it. I’ll drop that notion into the ear of Bruce Miller, the showrunner, and see what he can do with that, because of course the show is filmed in Toronto. Maybe Drake could help smuggle someone?
You’re warned of light spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale from here on out, but Canada is eventually revealed as a refugee haven for men, women and children fleeing the oppressive Gilead (formerly the United States of America). Drake could just as easily play himself as one of said smugglers, as someone with the resources to aid border efforts.
And really, we can make this happen. We can have the whole of Alexis Bledel’s series regular return as a buddy comedy with Drake, superstar smuggler and occasional performer, like the Marlene Dietrich of Toronto. Just give us something less existentially horrifying to look forward to.
In the meantime, all episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1 are available on Hulu, with Season 2 due out in 2018.
