Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly have launched a gun control initiative on the second anniversary of the Arizona shooting spree that wounded Giffords and left six others dead.

The Associated Press reports that Giffords and Kelly's political action committee, Americans For Responsible Solutions, will raise money for research and implementation of greater gun control measures. Giffords and Kelly introduced the initiative via an op-ed column in U.S. Today.

Giffords and Kelly intend to use funds raised by Americans For Responsible Solutions to "balance the influence of the gun lobby." The couple say that Congress has done "nothing at all" to address the growing increase in gun violence in the United States, hope to start a national discourse on gun violence and raise funds for political activity, so that "legislators will no longer have reason to fear the gun lobby."

This initiative comes in the same week that gun rights advocates and conservative groups joined forces to declare January 19th, 2013 as "Gun Appreciation Day." What do you think about these recent developments in the continuing discussion of gun control?
