Have you ever made a promise with a friend or family member that if either one of you were to ever win the lottery you would split the winnings? I think a lot of people say this but how many of those people actually follow through with it? Tom Cook of Wisconsin, kept that promise to a long-time friend after nearly three decades.

According to MSN, Tom Cook and his friend, Joseph Feeny, shook hands back in 1992 and promised each other that if either one of them ever won the Powerball jackpot, they would split the winnings.

Cook bought his ticket at Synergy Coop in Menomonie in hopes to win the $22 million jackpot, and low and behold, he DID. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in about 292 million. So, Mr. Cook was pretty darn lucky.

Cook never forgot that promise he and his friend made all those years ago and he called Joseph Feeny to let him know he won the jackpot and that he was splitting the $22 million with him. Naturally, Feeny couldn’t believe it. Feeny, an avid fisherman, responded by saying, “Are you jerking my bobber?”

They decided to the cash option of about $16.7 million. That means they each have nearly $5.7 million after taxes are paid. Feeny was already retired. Cook joined him in retirement and I don’t blame him.
