Lafayette firefighters responded to World Harvest Lighthouse Church Friday morning after people pumping iron at a local gym nearby noticed smoke coming from the building.

When firefighters arrived at the location in the 100 block of East Butcher Switch Road, they noticed heavy smoke coming from the interior. Once they managed to get inside the church, they found the fire in the kitchen and got it under control within 20 minutes.

Unfortunately, the fire had enough time to inflict heavy damage to the kitchen and heavy smoke and soot damage to the rest of the church, including the sanctuary.

According to a press release from the Lafayette Fire Department, fire investigators are examining a kitchen appliance as possibly contributing to the fire but the cause is still under investigation.
