Scott Fire Department Has Important Reminder for Homeowners
(Scott, Louisiana) - Summer is rapidly approaching, and soon temperatures in Acadiana will be soaring, and with that, the Scott Fire Department has an important reminder for homeowners before summer.
As temperatures start to rise, we will soon be adjusting the thermostats in our homes, which means your air conditioner will be running much more in the months ahead.
Like any other component in your house, your AC unit does produce heat the longer it runs, and if there's any obstruction or debris in or on the unit, it can pose a danger. Electrical fires in homes have been on the rise in recent years, and knowing that, the Scott F.D. reminds you to inspect your AC unit before summer.

If you look at your outside unit at your house, you may see leaves and other debris building up in the cage that houses the motor for your unit. If you see debris in it, you need to remove it or have someone safely remove leaves or debris that can catch fire if they come into contact with the motor or wires.
Let me warn you, if you wish to remove debris from the inside of your unit, always remove the breaker before putting your hands down into the cage to retrieve what may have built up in it.
As for window units, you should never use extension cords to power these units. Plus, like with outside units, you should inspect the window unit for any obstruction that could warm up and catch fire.
Remember, it is always a good idea to have your AC units serviced by a professional before each summer. Not only do they know how to properly clean the units, but they can also inspect electrical components on your unit and may help eliminate any future issues as temperatures soar into the 90s later this summer.
