Why Car Dealerships Are Closed on Sundays in Louisiana
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - Have you ever driven past a car dealership in Louisiana on a Sunday and asked, "Why are they closed on Sundays?"
For years, I have wondered the same thing, and after a short conversation with a colleague, I was reminded of the "Blue Laws" in the Bayou State.
These are the same laws that affect or restrict alcohol sales on Sundays in some states. The "Blue Laws" promote Christian and Jewish values, and they restrict commercial activities on the Sabbath to encourage worship and rest.

According to Car Parts, these restrictions directly affect the car industry, which is why dealerships aren't open here. The colleague I was speaking to even informed me that those who sell vehicles cannot leave a business card on vehicles that are on the lot, as that would be a violation, too.
Many dealerships support the enforcement of these laws, as it gives their employees a day off, even when banks and other financial institutions are closed, which is often needed to purchase a new vehicle.
This Busiest Day of The Week For Car Dealerships
Sure, many people do car shopping on Sundays while dealerships are closed, and shoppers are allowed to walk the lots. There's nothing wrong with that, and, in fact, I asked someone who's been in the business of selling vehicles for many years, and he informed me that Mondays are sometimes the busiest days on car lots because people have shopped the day prior.

So, like alcohol sales on Sundays, there are restrictions even at car dealerships, and it's no mistake that all dealerships are closed in Louisiana on Sundays.
If you're curious, I do not think the "Blue Laws" have a legal basis for why Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, but they do follow the idea of giving their employees the day off to rest and be with their families.
