Butterbeer is mentioned in Harry Potter books and all eight movies. If you are a wizard of the internet, you will find that butterbeer is fiction. After a visit to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida I'm here to tell you it is very real and very good.

Although butterbeer is thought to be an appealing drink based on Harry Potter books and movies, it may actually have been a drink from back in the 1500s. Buttered beer was actually mentioned in a publication out of London in 1588 A.D. It was made from beer, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, cloves and butter.

In a recent visit to Universal Studios my kids and our guide through the park, Kevin expressed to me the importance of my trying the butterbeer in which I'd never heard of before.

It came in regular (cold) or frozen.  I asked the young people accompanying me if it had alcohol in it, it did not.

After standing for a short time in somewhat of a long line for the obviously popular beverage, another dispensing station opened and within seconds I was holding a plastic cup of butterbeer. It smelled of butterscotch and had a foamy froth on top.

I was hooked after my first sip. This stuff was if butterscotch and heaven had collided in my mouth.  Very sweet though.  I would imagine too much might give one a tummy ache.

After returning to Louisiana, I decided to scour the internet for the closest recipe to the butterbeer I'd had in Florida. This recipe claims to taste exactly like the butterbeer in the wizarding world of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.

Ingredients you'll need for the drink:

  • 2 liters cream soda chilled
  • 1/4 tsp caramel extract
  • 1/4 tsp butter extract

Ingredients you'll need for the frothy cream topping:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup butterscotch topping
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions:

Whip 1 cup heavy cream in a large mixing bowl until it gets thick and stiff. Add 1/2 cup of butterscotch topping and 1/4 cup powdered sugar.  Now you have the topping.

Mix the caramel and butter extracts with the chilled cream soda.  For a colder version, place mixture in the freezer for a while before serving.

Top with the frothy cream topping and enjoy!
