"Fame" and "Flashdance" singer and actress Irene Cara has died. She was born in New York City, Cara's biggest break of her career can in 1980 when she was cast as Coco Hernandez in "Fame".

Irene Cara's publicist Judith A. Moose, President of JM Media Group, announced that the artist had passed away just after midnight on Saturday, Nov. 26 on social media.

It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer passed away in her Florida home. In the 80s Cara's hit "Fame" the title track from the movie of the same name sored to the top of the Billboard charts. Her performance earned her a Gloden Globe for "Best Actress".

Irene Cara's "What a Feeling" from the movie won her an Oscar for Best Original Song.

Details about Irene Cara's death have not been disclosed. Irene's family has requested privacy as they process their grief.
