In Acadiana there seems to be more and more farmers wrapping bales of hat in a white plastic.  Farmers may have used this process to protect hay for some time, and if this is the case, I've been totally oblivious.  I just started seeing these huge bales of hay wrapped in plastic in fields, and wondered why farmers wrap hay and how it's done.

These big bales almost look like a UFO left a little something behind.  In reality, wrapping the bales of hay in plastic, protects them from mold and rot and has nothing to do with a UFO siting.  The hay has to be baled when moisture levels are just right and the plastic must completely seal the bale.  There can be no holes.  A hole the size of a quarter can cause a large area of rotting.

So how are these big bales of hay wrapped?  There are different machine that do the job, here are a few machines used for baling hay.
