UL Softball Blanks LSU, 1-0, Heads To Super Regionals
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team won the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Sunday, defeating the top-seeded LSU Tigers, 1-0 at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.
The win qualifies for an NCAA Super Regional for the second-consecutive year, including the third time in four years, and the fourth time in three years.
For the third-consecutive game, the Cajuns jumped out on top, scoring a run in the first inning, as Nerissa Myers doubled to left-centerfield, moved to third on a fly ball off the bat of Brianna Cherry, and then scored on a ground ball off the bat of Sarah Draheim, to make it 1-0.
Though few may have known it at the time, it would turn out to be the only run of the game, as UL’s Jordan Wallace and LSU’ Rachele Fico would lock-up in an epic pitcher’s duel for the second straight day.
LSU loaded the bases, with one out in the top half of the seventh inning, but Wallace coaxed Bianka Bell to pop-up to the circle, and then struck out Allison Falcon to end the game.
The win extended Louisiana’s win streak over LSU to five-consecutive games, and moved their record at the new Tiger Park to a perfect 6-0.
Wallace (31-7) picked-up her third win of the regional, tossing her third shutout. the sophomore, who pitched 21 scoreless innings during the weekend, allowed four hits, and four walks, while striking out four hitters.
Fico (24-13) was the loser, allowing only two hits, and two walks, while fanning three batters.
The Cajuns, behind the pitching of Wallace, did not allow a run in the regional, defeating Northwestern St., 3-0, along with two shutout wins over LSU, 3-0, and 1-0.
With the loss, the Tigers end their season with a record of 42-16.
With the win, the Cajuns improve to 46-13, and will take on the Michigan Wolverines in a Saturday/Sunday Super Regional series in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
It was 20 years ago, back in 1993, that the Cajuns won their first-ever regional, defeating Michigan, in Ann Arbor, to qualify for their first Women’s College World Series appearance.
