Another Tradition at Louisiana Weddings May Soon Be a Thing of The Past

Weddings in South Louisiana have so many traditions attached to them, but some are slowly fading away.

In recent years weddings have changed here and they will continue to change as younger generations "tie the knot."

I DJ many weddings in South Louisiana and have for many years, and through those years I have seen how much weddings have changed. For example, no longer do you see the entire wedding party dance during the formal dances, newlyweds have swiped that from their night just to get to the party much quicker.

Also, if you've attended a wedding recently in South Louisiana you may have noticed how much the music has changed at weddings receptions. No longer do people couples or even parents of the bride and groom want a lot of "older music."

I recently had one mother of the bride tell me to leave the old music at home and to bring plenty of music like "Boots With Fur." For those who don't know which song she was talking about, that would be "Low" by Flo Rida.

Now, let's get to a wedding tradition that I see fading away in 2024. I recently had three brides tell me before their wedding that they would not be participating in a certain tradition during their big night. Upon more discussion, the brides informed that they would not have the garter ceremony as a part of their reception.

Yes, brides are electing to not have their husbands remove the garter from their leg while sitting in front of guests and family. Two of the brides who elected to not have the garter removed from their leg told me that they thought it was "tacky" to do that in front of their guests.

I should add here that when the garter is often removed from a bride's leg at a reception her new husband often ends up under her dress and things can get somewhat Rated-R, if you know what I mean.

So if you're at a South Louisiana wedding reception and you notice a few things missing from the night, it was likely by design and the above reasons are why these wedding traditions are fading.
