I stumbled upon this Yahoo! Music story about the subject of the Knack's song "My Sharona", and am surprised I didn't know this earlier!

Turns out the song is 100% based on a real-life story.

When I was in the 8th grade, I won a "Dance Off" at a party that was held at a friend's house in Henry.  I don't remember much about the night (nothing more than poor memory, believe me): I remember that Gordy was one of the judges; I danced to the song with a girl (she was older than me, if I remember right); and I remember that one of the reasons we won the competition was because, during the "silent" part of the song, we both froze.  I guess that impressed the judges enough for us to win.

Don't get me wrong, this contest was just thrown together in someone's living room; it wasn't a big production, there was no rehearsal, no pre-planning.  When it came time to decide on a song, I suggested "My Sharona", only because I liked the song.

Anyway, having liked that song for so many years, I never knew the story behind the subject of the song, until now.

According to the story by Yahoo! Music's Craig Rosen, there was a girl named Sharona - a real girl, a hard-to-get girl, who loved her boyfriend, but finally gave in to the man who made her name famous.

I love stories like these that give insight to something we've had in our lives for so long.  Read the story, it's one of those that will make you say "Wow, I never knew that!".
