A front that is slowly moving into the Acadiana area and across the state has prompted some school districts to cancel school and other activities today.

All Calcasieu Parish Schools will be closed for today.

All Jefferson Davis Parish Schools have also made the decision to cancel school for today.

All Evangeline Parish Schools will be closed today due to the weather.

In addition, Acadia Parish officials say they will postpone the 4-H achievement day that was scheduled to happen today.

According to KATC TV Meteorologist Daniel Phillips, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for our area until 9 a.m. He adds that while these storms are passing through Acadiana, wind and hail could become issues.

The Calcasieu Parish School Board issued the following statement on their Facebook page last night:

Following this evening's weather briefing, we have made the decision to close all CPSB schools and facilities on Monday, April 29. Due to the unpredictable timing of the severe weather, we feel this decision is in the best interest of the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to campuses on Tuesday, April 30.

Jefferson Davis Parish School Superintendent John Hall posted the following on their Facebook page last night:

After conferences with the National Weather Service, Jeff Davis Schools will close on Monday, April 29. The deciding factor that helped me make this decision is the unknown timing of the squall line which can be from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. with lingering thunderstorms afterward. There is a high probability of up to 6 inches of rain and wind gusts within thunderstorms of greater than 70mph. Tornadoes will be possible.
