Madonna Uses Nazi Imagery in MDNA Tour Opener [VIDEO]
Madonna has always used her platform as the Queen of Pop to push the envelope. But has she taken it too far?
That depends on how you look at it. In her MDNA tour opener in Tel Aviv, Israel, Madonna acted, well, like Madonna. During the ‘Nobody Knows Me’ interlude, Madge flashed swastikas on screen and morphed into a hybrid of herself and Adolf Hitler, shocking some fans — and infuriating others. Nazis are no joke, especially in Israel.
Part of why the footage was unsettling to some fans is because of Madonna’s alleged previous ties to Nazism. The Huffington Post reported that in the credits for her film, ‘W.E.,’ Madonna thanks Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl and fashion designer John Galliano, who went on an anti-Semitic rant and claimed to love Hitler — leading to his firing from Christian Dior. The film itself garnered much criticism for allegedly glossing over the Duke of Windsor’s ties to Hitler and Nazism.
However, it’s important to note that within the same song, Madonna showed all sorts of symbols, from Muslim religious signs to monetary symbols and her usual Christian imagery. She even included her face in a likeness of slain teen Trayvon Martin. In another portion, teens who have committed suicide — including Tyler Clementi, whose webcam-criminal roommate reported to prison this week — are featured on the screen behind her dancers as they mime offing themselves. Just because she sparks a discussion about something doesn’t mean she’s endorsing it.
Nothing is too soon or too taboo for Madge.
