It's supposed to be a celebration. It's supposed to be a good time. Quite often it turns into a really nice party ruined by violence. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the violence has to stop.

As you might imagine the lure of Mardi Gras is a big enticement for tourist from around the world to visit our state. While the Mardi Gras season has its own reputation for debauchery the state can't afford for violence, especially gun violence , to become part of that reputation. That will dry up the flow of tourism dollars very quickly.

There have been two reports of gun violence in recent days at Mardi Gras parades. There was a report of a shooting in Thibodaux and at the New Orleans Bacchus parade.

Man, we've got to clean up the crime, and you know, the New Orleans police do a great job. Every time you hear about one of these guys getting picked up with a gun or shooting, you see they've been arrested two, three dozen times.

That's what Mr. Nungesser told the Louisiana Radio Network about the recent shooting in New Orleans. While the Lt. Governor has praise for law enforcement, he is calling out the judicial system that keeps turning these thugs back out on to our streets.

It's all these repeat offenders that keep committing these crimes. I mean, when's the last time you heard of somebody getting arrested for armed robbery with a gun and it's their first offense.

Fortunately there were no injuries reported with Bacchus shooting, a weapon was recovered and no arrests have been made at this time but police continue to investigate.
